Julia Lu was awakened by the commotion downstairs. Her light sleep was easily disturbed by the slightest noise. Opening her eyes and looking around the unfamiliar surroundings, she realized she was no longer in the small house she had bought off-campus, but in the Lu Family home.
The Lu Family? The very thought made her heart race with a mix of warmth and softness. This was her home now; she was no longer an orphan. She had a family.
Dressed and with a sense of belonging, she opened the door and descended the stairs. The rotating staircase was covered with soft carpet, and Julias steps were light, making no sound as she moved down the stairs, getting closer to the increasingly clear voices from the floor below.
In the spacious living room, a well-maintained middle-aged couple and a tall young man were comforting a crying girl, surrounding her with gentle coaxing.
“Sylvia, don’t cry, it’s not a big deal. Don’t cry so much that your eyes swell up, they won’t look pretty then.”
“It’s not a big deal, we are family, she won’t do anything to you. And it wasn’t intentional on your part.”
“Right, sister, don’t cry. Julia isn’t hurt, she’s not dead!”
Hearing this, Julia understood the situation completely. The soft anticipation in her eyes gradually dissipated, leaving only a chill.
Before returning to the Lu Family, she had been through an accident. Due to her busy research work, Julia often stayed up late, working overtime, and by the time she returned home from the lab, it was already late at night. She had no time to cook, so she often ordered takeout.
She was accustomed to eating rice noodles from a nearby couples shop. In the lonely nights, a bowl of hot rice noodles was the warmest thing for her.
That day, as usual, she ordered a bowl of rice noodles and went to open the door as usual. But this time, it wasn’t the familiar couple delivering the food; it was a strange man.
Julia frowned, and as she reached for the noodles, the man pushed her into the room and followed her in, locking the door behind him and throwing the noodles aside, lunging at her with intent to rape.
Fortunately, Julia was agile and had practiced martial arts. She dodged, grabbed a baseball bat by the door, and struck the man on the back of his neck, knocking him unconscious. She tied him up and, after lighting some incense to relax his guard, interrogated him.
The results shocked her; it turned out that Sylvia Lu, the Lu Familys eldest daughter, had sent him with orders to rape Julia and take compromising photos of her.
At that time, Julia didn’t know Sylvia and had no idea how she had offended her. However, it was then that Grandpa Lu found her. She was the Lu Familys lost daughter for 18 years, the true eldest Miss Lu, while Sylvia was merely an adopted daughter.
Back at the Lu Family home, Julia threw the signed confession at Sylvia’s face. Grandpa Lu said to put the matter aside until her parents returned.
Now they were back, and this was how they were dealing with it!
Lost in her thoughts, a glass of cold water was thrown at her. Although distracted, Julia’s reflexes were still sharp, and she dodged to the side, avoiding the water that only dampened her shoulder.
Seeing that he had missed, Ethan Lu, filled with rage, threw a glass straight at her, aiming for her eyes with full force, intending to blind her.
At such close range and with the force of an angry man’s throw, if hit, Julia would have lost her eyes, with even orbital rupture being a mild outcome.
Barely dodging the blow, she stumbled back, but the staircase was behind her, and the step hit her ankle, causing her to wince and instinctively bend over.
Ethan, satisfied that he had caused her some pain, folded his arms and looked down at Julia with undisguised contempt.
“Are you Julia Lu?”
Julia looked up at the tall and sturdy young man before her. She recognized him from the photos of the Lu Family; this was the youngest son, Ethan Lu, and also her biological brother.
Julia’s eyes welled up, but she quickly blinked away the moisture and extinguished all expectations for family and the Lu Family.
“Why aren’t you speaking, are you mute?” Ethan was very dissatisfied with Julia’s silence, stepping forward to grab her hair and force her to look up.
Before his hand could even touch her, a stern voice from upstairs stopped him: “Stop!”
It was Grandpa!
Ethan’s heart raced, and he quickly stopped, stepping back and lowering his hands to his sides, looking like a well-behaved child.
“How could you raise a hand to your sister!” Grandpa Lu was so angry he kept poking his cane on the floor.
Seeing the old man angry, Julia’s father and mother quickly made excuses for Ethan.
“Dad, Ethan is still young, he didn’t mean it,” said Julia’s father.
Then, Julia’s mother nervously approached Ethan and explained, “Ethan just cares about Sylvia, he’s just a bit hasty, but he doesn’t have any bad intentions.”
Just now, when Ethan hit Julia, her parents watched coldly without a word, tacitly condoning it.
Now, when Grandpa Lu merely reprimanded Ethan, her parents were anxious to defend him.
Sitting on the stair, Julia looked at the scene of maternal love and filial piety, not knowing whether her leg hurt more or her heart.
Grandpa Lu gave Julia’s mother a deep look and didn’t continue to pursue Ethan’s assault but instead brought up Sylvia.
“Do you know about Sylvia hiring someone to assault Julia?”
“Dad,” Julia’s father, fearing that Grandpa Lu would scare Sylvia, quickly spoke up, “It didn’t happen, and Julia is fine. Since everyone is fine, we are all family, let’s just let it go.”
“Yes,” Julia’s mother added, “Sylvia has been crying from fear. She didn’t mean to hurt Julia, she just wanted to scare her a bit, but the bad person acted on his own.”
“Scare!” Grandpa Lu sneered, his tone severe and unyielding, “Even attempted murder carries a sentence.”
This meant that Sylvia must be punished.
Hearing this, Julia’s mother was heartbroken. She didn’t dare argue with Grandpa Lu, so she turned to Julia.
This was the first sentence she said to Julia: “Julia, since you are fine, there is no need to be unforgiving. Sylvia is already terrified.”
Julia looked up, studied her for a moment, then lowered her head.
She thought, so this is what it feels like to have a mother.
But why does it feel so uncomfortable?
Julia’s father also said, “Julia, from now on, you are part of the Lu Family. Presumably, you don’t want everyone to be unhappy. If you are sensible, you will forgive Sylvia.”
What did this mean, was it a threat?
If she didn’t forgive Sylvia, she would be the one who is unforgiving and unsensible?
Julia stood up, walked over to Sylvia.
“Sister,” Sylvia looked at her with watery, innocent eyes, “I’m sorry, please forgive me.”
Forgive?
Julia tugged at the corners of her mouth, revealing a faint smile, then suddenly raised her hand and with all her strength, slapped Sylvia across the face.
“Alright, I forgive you!”
